Uai, by Naipe Foundry
Uai, an agile sans for interfaces with a mineiro accent
Uai is UI, uai!
Uai is a sans serif designed to meet the high standards of modern user-interface design, infused with the taste and beauty of Minas Gerais. This 14-style, fully variable family is highly legible and adaptable, solving complex design challenges without losing its charm. Just like the people of Minas, it always finds a way to do things its own way—quietly confident, effortlessly effective.

It stays in place
Due to its multiplexed design, Uai adapts every style to fit in the same width. In other words, even if you change the weight, the length of your text will remain the same, adjusting itself nicely and neatly to the available space. No only that, you can also play with CSS styles and your layout won’t break.
Uai-of-all-trades!
Guimarães Rosa once said: “Minas, they’re so many. However, only a few are those who knows the thousand faces of the Gerais.” Below, are some interfaces we made with Uai to bring you a taste of its plurality!

Talk talk
During the colonization of Brazil, Minas Gerais was synonymous with wealth. The culture of the mineiro people was shaped by the history of gold mining, by their quiet persistence, and the clever ways they found to survive among gold and diamonds. From the rich mix of peoples who lived there, a tradition of warmth and humility emerged. To this day, it’s still a place full of great stories. To share some of these tales, we’ve put together a curated cinematic selection showcasing the contemporary mineiro scene. Press play and enjoy!

Escrevivência
A história de Conceição Evaristo
“Eles combinaram de nos matar, mas a gente combinamos de não morrer”. A “escrevivência” propaga sentimentos, dores, alegrias, gritos e sussurros de uma multidão.
Like what you see? Why not take Uai for a spin, uai!
Who’s in charge?
Uai was actually created based on the preferences of UI designers. To better understand the needs of the industry, we tested it with a bunch of users and conducted a 45-day focus group to refine every detail of the font. Here are some of the lessons we learned:
“It is annoying when I have to change the font’s weight and the text doesn’t fit anymore.”
What’s your choice?
When it came to letters with two versions, we asked designers to choose which one they preferred as the default, and which as the alternate. After all, we’re all about making listening to the user :)

Uai, proudly presented by Naipe Foundry
Under the name of Naipe Foundry, the carioca duo of Álvaro Franca and Felipe Casaprima tell Brazilian stories by designing fonts fit for your next design project.
Felipe and Álvaro are fans of the culture, food, stories and friends of Minas Gerais. Uai has the curves of the São Francisco river, the cleverness of the mineiros, and the power of telling stories like a long and cozy conversation with coffee and pão-de-queijo.
